Know Your Diamond

A diamond is brilliant, returning more white light to the eye. It disperses fire and scintillates with reflected and refracted light. A diamond is rare and it endures, being the hardest natural substance on earth and the purest of all gemstones.

When buying a diamond, it helps to know about the 4C’s: Colour, Clarity, Cut, and Carat.

Colour

diamonds come in a range of natural colours, from totally colourless to yellow

Cut

There is a defined relationship between the table, the crown, the pavilion and the girdle.

Clarity

All gem-grade diamonds can receive a clarity rating based on an industry standard scale ranging from FL (flawless) to I3 (heavily included).

Carat

the heavier and larger the diamond, usually the more rare it is, for instance a two-carat diamond will be more than twice as valuable as a one-carat stone.

Know Your Colored Gemstones

Beauty plays the most important part in a coloured stone. The richness of its colour, how much light it scatters when you tilt it in different directions, its degree of brilliance and how it has been cut and polished – all add beauty and value to a stone. Years ago, gems were classified by colour alone. But not so today. There are many factors that determine the value (and price) of gems.

Coloured gemstones are simply defined as any gem that isn’t a diamond.

Type of Gems

Gems can be diveded into three main categories, depending on what they are made of.
